Case Studies:
How have different libraries made it easier for their users to browse, by customizing call numbers?
Libraries have adapted call numbers in many ways to make it easier to find items.
These are all choices YOU could adapt for YOUR library:

FIRST INTITIAL:

What if you have lots of fiction written by several different authors with the same last name? My local library expanded the cutter to include the first initial of the author:

FICTION - - ---- -FICTION
King, S. - - - - - King, T.

This keeps books by different authors with similar names from getting mixed up on the shelves.

TITLE:

Add the title of the book to a call number. This helps when one author has many books. I did this at a library I worked at and the patrons and staff loved it.

FICTION
King, S.
Carrie

FICTION
King, S.
It

FICTION
King, S.
Pet

FICTION
King, S.
Stand
YEAR:

My local library adds the publication year on the spine label.

If users look for the newest computer books, they can tell from the cutter number on the spine label when a book was published without having to take it off the shelf.

SPELL OUT SECTIONS:

Some libraries spell out the section name, rather than using "F" for "Fiction" or "M" for "Mystery".

The goal is always
to make it easier
to find things.
